The Shanty Man Cometh!!!
A. This month I just had to tip my hat to one of my favorite
musicians on Maui. My pseudo "Grandpa" The shanty
man himself; Trevor Jones. I just got home from happy hour at Maui
Brews where Trevor was busy entertaining his "Asshole Club",
a crowd of loyal fans who've been coming to see him perform for the last
17 years. Where do I even start to begin to describe Trevor? The
only musician on this island with a dirtier song list than me? Somehow
it just doesn't do him justice. I'll put Trevor in his own words...
Trevor Jones: Born in Wales, raised in Holyhead, the main
port from Wales to Ireland. Working on ships since the age of 13,
from the Irish sea to the coast of Africa during the Biafran War.
Along the way learning the songs of the sea when "Shantys" weren't
cool. "I learned from the best, Stan Hugill, he taught me that
sea songs evolved and there are many versions of the same song.
There are too many land lubbers who profess to be experts, but the old
salts laugh at them and know that there are really no shanty men anymore"
...But thanks for the memories!
I guarantee you don't own a cd like this.
This cd is a collection of 17 of Trevor's favorite sea shanties.
If you've ever been to sea or just sat by the water in an old fishing
town, smelling the salt air and dreaming of pirates and tall ships, then
you'll love listening as Trevor takes you back a couple hundred years
to places we can only dream about today! If you'd like a copy of
your own just click on the cd cover above or right here and follow the
directions.
In the meantime I'm trying to talk Trevor into
putting together volume 1 of his world famous dirty limericks. (Give
me a little time I'm working on it). Drop me line if you'd like
to see Trevor Jones perform and I'll tell you where and when!
